New study finds no strong evidence that the chemicals contribute to a common birth defect of the penis, though some research has linked chemicals in chlorinated tap water to the risk of birth defects. The defect, known as hypospadias, occurs when the urinary outlet develops on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip. Genetics are thought to play a large role in hypospadias risk, but the other potential causes are not fully understood.

MADRID - "We are calling for rights of non-humans." Spain's parliament voiced its support for the rights of great apes to life and freedom in what will apparently be the first time any national legislature has called for such rights for non-humans.

Parliament's environmental committee approved resolutions urging Spain to comply with the Great Apes Project, devised by scientists and philosophers who say our closest genetic relatives deserve rights hitherto limited to humans.

"This is a historic day in the struggle for animal rights and in defense of our evolutionary comrades, which will doubtless go down in the history of humanity," said Pedro Pozas, Spanish director of the Great Apes Project.

According to an assessment by U.S. intelligence agencies, global warming is likely to increase illegal immigration, create humanitarian disasters and destabilize precarious governments in political hot spots, all of which could affect U.S. national security.

Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central and Southeast Asia are most vulnerable to warming-related drought, flooding, extreme weather and hunger. The intelligence assessment warns of the global impact from the spillover: increased migration and "water-related disputes," according to prepared remarks by Tom Fingar, deputy director of national intelligence for analysis, who was scheduled to speak before a joint House committee hearing. "We judge that the most significant impact for the United States will be indirect and result from climate-driven effects on many other countries and their potential to seriously affect U.S. national security interests," Fingar said.

Research suggests if you want to live a healthier life get a dog.

The companionship offered by many pets is thought to be good for you, but the benefits of owning a dog outstrip those of cat owners, the study says.

A psychologist from Queen's University, Belfast, said dog owners tended to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Writing in the British Journal of Health Psychology, she says that regular "walkies" may partly explain the difference.

Dr. Deborah Wells reviewed dozens of earlier research papers which looked at the health benefits of pet ownership. She confirmed that pet owners tended in general to be healthier than the average member of the population. However, her research suggested that dog ownership produced more positive influence than cat ownership.

June 23, 2008 - MANILA, Philippines - Residents wade through a flooded street in the Philippine capital of Manila, on June 22, 2008, in the aftermath of Typhoon Fengshen (Frank). The storm hit central Philippines early Saturday, setting off landslides and floods, knocking out power, and leaving hundreds missing.

Although no final death toll has been determined, more than 800 people may have died aboard the M.V. Princess of the Stars, a ferry boat that capsized midday Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

The United States government expressed sympathy to the Philippines over the heavy casualties caused by Typhoon Fengshen (Frank) last weekend.

The Philippine government declared three entire provinces - Albay, Antique, and Iloilo - in a state of calamity, along with three towns in two other provinces.
